Forging two knife blades
with a 100 lb.
Little Giant Power Hammer
at
Don Hanson's Shop.
This is a group of photos of myself forging two blades last fall.
I spend quite abit of time in front of the anvil hand forging blades.
But, I wanted to show how a blade can be
forged to shape on a well tuned power hammer.
My 100 lb. Little Giant has unbelievable control
and will make short work of reducing large stock into a blade.
I started with a 4-1/2 inch piece of
1-3/8 inch 1086M round stock and forged two blades.
A 7-1/2 inch fillet blade, 1/8 inch thick at the ricasso.
And also a 9-1/2 inch bowie blade, 1/4 inch at the ricasso.
Both blades have 5 - 6 inch tangs.
I used a hand held tool under the hammer
to form the choil right behind the edge. This really helps
define the shape of my forged blades.
The finished knives are at the bottom of the page.
